THE ART OF YIELDING - a two part workshop
Saturday, April 17th at 10:00 am - 12:30 pm CEST (Central European Summer Time) and Sunday, April 18th at 10:00 am - 12:30 pm CEST on Zoom
“Water is fluid, soft, and yielding. But water will wear away rock, which is rigid and cannot yield. As a rule, whatever is fluid, soft, and yielding will overcome whatever is rigid and hard. This is another paradox: what is soft is strong.” Lao Tzu
In the context of Somatics, the word “Yield” has come to mean a relational quality to gravity, space, and stimulus. It’s an approach that can allow us to practice “effortless effort”. In these two workshops, we will explore how feeling into the body with respect and playfulness forms a safe container in which we can practice the balance of strength and fluidity.
These stand-alone day workshops or weekend coupling are intended for any practitioner that wishes to follow a continuous body/mind practice. Previous meditation and somatic practices are not necessary but will provide familiarity with the territory.
Saturday 10:00-12:30 CEST - Yielding through the Koshas
The five koshas (“sheaths”) are first mentioned within the Upanishads, a thousand year old-plus set of teachings mapping the voyage to our deepest Selves.
Playing with the map of sheaths, we will melt through the koshas from body to breath, to mantra to wisdom, to the sublime center of well being. With fluency across the atmospheric tones of our inner realms, we will dive through the interwoven layers of our physical, energetic, mental, wisdom and bliss bodies, supporting easeful conversation between the multifaceted aspects of ourselves. With yielding rebound practices like meditation, journaling, breathwork, asana to free movement, we nourish a setting of effortless effort. We’ll journey from the gross to the subtle and learn to play with the symphonic melting of Self into the whole. Think of Saturday’s practice as a gentle stream yielding self to Self.
Sunday 10:00-12:30 CEST - Yield in the dynamic Self
The synchronous energy that ripples through the koshas benefits from adaptability and the transmography of form. Sunday’s class will build on Saturday’s foundation and call on the practice of buoyancy, redirecting play in a more active dynamic. We will explore the relational aspects of a harmonized individual form as it encounters modulations and amplification of textures, rhythms and dynamics to see how the practice of yield creates a more fluid river of self.
The koshas do not limit us to any particular way of moving, breathing, or being but rather, when accessed fully, they transport us into what is popularly known as “flow state”. We will play in variability and range of rhythms bringing the practice of Yield into one of meeting and responding to stimulus as is arises through more dynamic asana, free movement, breathwork, and meditation to reiterate and expand through scales of intensity. Calibrating effort and ease to meet flow.
Building from Saturday’s class or as a stand-alone, Sunday’s class will play with our capacity to meet an increasing range of movement and flow while maintaining our capacity to Yield. Sunday’s class will be more like a dynamic river with eddies, swirls, and waterfalls.
